Mona's Hot Four's weekly Tuesday night gig is the best-kept open secret in New York's thriving hot-jazz scene. Since June of 2007, the band (led by Dennis Lichtman) has hosted a late-night, trad-jazz jam session at Mona's bar in Manhattan's East Village from Tuesday night into the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
TUESDAYS AT MONA'S, an ambitious 2-disc set released in December 2012, includes a live CD of Mona's Hot Four with 19 guest musicians, as well as a DVD documentary by Hi Tide Films about the Tuesday night session. The band also released LIVE AT MONA'S in 2009.
The atmosphere of the weekly session was inspired by the famed traditional Irish sessions that had taken place at Mona's every Monday since the 1990s – a laid-back environment that manages to welcome guest musicians with open arms, while focusing on keeping the music hot.
Every week brings new faces to the session - local pro musicians hanging out after their gigs, touring artists passing through town, young players looking to make new connections, seasoned veterans enjoying a youthful, exuberant scene, and on and on. Heavyweights such as Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jonathan Batiste, Nicholas Payton, Chris Thile, and Anat Cohen are but a few of the greats who have joined in over the years.
